At the home of Phil and Wanda Wright, “Mi Casa, Su Casa”
Ah-h… what a perfectly cozy, informative and festive banquet 17 PAPO people enjoyed at Phil and Wanda’s home last Wednesday. In other words: we all appreciated the comfortable surroundings, the demo by acrylic-sist(?) Charles Harrington (well—O.K. – acrylic painter) and the truly scrumptious Tex-Mex luncheon.
First tho’: under cowering skies, the Bunny arrived with her ever-faithful, tummy-friendly brownies. Then Charles and Daphne Harrington, Charles carrying his easel, Daphne carrying everything else. (Just kidding?). In short order, Steve Schneider, Victor Parkerson, Becky Christensen and Julie Hayes drove up. Julie immediately began distributing the new 2015 Members Directory. (Well done, Julie!) Bunny goofed and didn’t get Becky’s info to Julie.
When Glenn Benson and Alan Morgan arrived, Bunny (bein’ smart-alecky) asked of Glenn “And who are you?” (We haven’t seen him for a while.) Alan answered, “His name’s Jimmy.” So Jimmy it was. And barefoot too. (Well this is Arkansas). Along about this time and before the demo Cindy Ho, Gloria Pendry, Roz Ramey and Liz Smith scooted in. Sherry Portman rushed in with a try of brownies “Just out of the oven!”
A pause right here: most everyone brought in one or two examples of their art and set them up in Phil’s enclosed deck; a light and airy glass-galore studio.
O.K.: Demo by Charles (who had thoughtfully supplied a drop cloth). His subject was a photo of their back yard. With a running commentary and answering questions, Charles got into it. Highlights and tips include using a (size-preferred) square Masonite board mounted on canvas. And gesso-ed. His brushes today include a No.1/2”, a No. 1” and for details, a No. 4. About this time, Mike and Carol Tillery tiptoed in. (It took them only “an hour and a half” to get here). Another arrival made itself known: thunder – and soon – pouring rain. Another tip from Charles (noticing the rain): don’t use water to thin acrylics – only acrylic mat medium.
Time out for a short (!) recess. Right. Everyone headed for Phil’s studio for Show & Tell. From Cindy and Carol’s flowers, to the natural (PLein Air!) scenes from just about everyone else, to Victor and Bunny’s portraits – WOW! – quite a selection. As zeveryone sat down again, Charles continued. Soon 11:25 appeared along with “I can stop whenever we get hungry.” At that, every head turned and looked at Victor who already was sitting at the table. Waiting.
LUNCH – Yes! In capitals! Ah-h… what can I say. Lettuce waiting to be piled high with all kinds of toppings imaginable (for either a salad or a tortilla wrap or both); chicken chunks marinated overnight in a lime/cilantro/secret ingredient sauce and a Mexican rice casserole. And the two varieties of brownies. Oh my. With our breadbaskets full of wonderful items, we could heartily and with much thanks say to the Wrights “Su Casa, Mi Casa.”
Thanks Wanda and Phil for your wonderful hospitality. The demo by Charles was a great idea. As always, you make all of us feel so welcome and comfortable. Our abdominal regions are also deeply appreciative. God bless all.
